How to loan against fine wine

Your fine wine is assessed by our specialists and network of wine experts. If it meets our lending criteria and you accept our offer, it usually stays in your existing storage facility and is simply moved back into your account once the loan is settled.

Getting your fine wine to us

Keep it in the same facility

If your wine is already in a bonded or professional facility, it can usually stay there for the duration of the loan, with no need to physically move it. It is simply transferred into an account in our name. Submit your enquiry online, telling us where it is stored, so we can work towards a preliminary valuation.

Move to a new facility

Alternatively, our specialist fine wine logistics partner can move your wine to one of our facilities, fully insured in transit. We will discuss and confirm the logistics with you after the preliminary valuation.

Valuing your fine wine

Our valuations team, supported by a network of independent wine specialists, give you an accurate, up-to-date valuation. We consider four key factors:

  • Wine and vintage: we value entire collections, cases or single bottles of sought-after vintages, from producers such as Petrus and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti
  • Provenance and sale history: paperwork covering the original sale, storage conditions and bond details all support the valuation
  • Condition and storage: wine should be cellared in appropriate, climate-controlled conditions and will remain in storage for the duration of the loan. Investment grade fine wine is usually held in a bonded warehouse facility.
  • Market value: our offers are based on the current market value of your wine, using recent comparable sale records to determine the price

We usually carry out a remote valuation online first, then our valuers travel to where your wine is stored for a final assessment.

How we care for your wine

While your wine is with us, it is in safe hands, our reputation depends on it. Every loan is given a unique reference number, so your wine is always identifiable and accounted for. It is held in a bonded or specialist fine wine facility, kept in climate-controlled conditions and routinely checked throughout the loan.

Everything is catalogued, and our loan inventory is regularly audited. As your wine usually stays in the same facility, it is returned to you in the same condition we received it, usually without being physically moved at all.

Fine wine lending

Reasons for loaning on wine

The main reasons clients borrow against their wine collections. Collectors, dealers and business owners can all benefit.

Business loans against wine assets

Release capital tied up in your fine wine to cover a business need, such as a tax bill, without selling it. Ideal for business owners and dealers.

Access funds ahead of a wine sale

If you plan to sell your wine, we can advance you the money now and handle the sale on your behalf, even if that is months away. Ideal for owners selling a wine collection or those who have inherited one.

Fund your next wine purchase

Put the value in wine you already own towards buying more, whether at auction or privately. Ideal for collectors looking to grow their cellars.

Release the value in your wine

A significant share of your wealth may sit in a fine wine collection. Borrowing against it frees up money for short term use elsewhere. Ideal for collectors.

Tips for borrowing on fine wine

A few practical tips to help you get the most from your classic car loan, and to receive a preliminary offer as quickly as possible. The more information you can share, the quicker the process.

Understand how wine is valued

Fine wine can be bought from merchants or through auction and private sales, each at different prices. Our valuations reflect what your wine would achieve if we sold it at auction.

Have your provenance ready

We will need proof of purchase, storage history and condition records to confirm authenticity and finalise your offer.

Keep it in bond

Wine held in bonded, temperature-controlled storage retains its value best, as the conditions are documented and trusted across the trade.

Ask about a sale advance

When the time comes to sell, a sale advance pays you upfront while we wait for the right buyer and the right moment to achieve the best price.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about borrowing against your luxury assets.

Why should I pawn my fine wine collection?

Fine wine is an investment to be realised as it increases in value. We offer fast valuations of your whole collection or a few bottles. Paperwork and good condition will support appraisal, with the funds secured by your fine wines in your account within 24 hours of accepting our valuation.

Where can I pawn my fine wine in London?

If you’re looking to pawn fine wine in London, we can travel to your cellar or storage facility for valuation. We can lend against fine wine based anywhere across the UK, with the wine stored in a professional climate-controlled facility for the duration of the loan.

Is it better to sell or pawn wine?

A finite asset, the value of wines rises every time other bottles are consumed making it a good long-term investment. Leveraging the value by pawning fine wine lets you access funds quickly, while we hold your assets in secure storage, returning them to your ownership when the loan is repaid. We only loan against fine wine; we do not buy fine wine.
