Valuing Your Antique
Our Antique specialists are highly skilled and knowledgeable experts who look at different factors when valuing your antique to ensure that you will receive an accurate and up to date valuation. The four most important factors are:
Making sure that something is what it looks to be is at the heart of all valuations. Looking for the tell-tale signs of a bona fide antique includes checking the design and fine detail of the piece. Hallmarks or designers’ marks can be evidence of its value.
An antique’s condition is critical to its valuation. Two identical pieces can fetch different valuations based on their condition. Small chips and scratches might be considered flaws that don’t dramatically change the value of the antique, but a major crack or a broken mechanism might affect the valuation.
Some antiques can command a large valuation price, even with a few little flaws. An antique’s rarity can drive up its value, regardless of age or provenance. The market can determine the valuation and a sought-after piece will always secure a higher valuation than more commonplace antiques.
Being able to trace an antique’s history can make a real difference to its valuation. An antique’s provenance – the history of its ownership – can help validate origin and authenticity. The more documentation or evidence you can supply about the antiques ownership, the greater the chance of a higher value valuation.
Looking After Your Antique
If you use our specialist collection service to have your antique collected from your home, it will be fully insured against theft, damage and wear during transportation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I sell my antiques to a dealer or pawn them?
When you pawn your antiques, the process can be much faster and it allows you to reclaim your antiques in the future. Often, our clients simply need a short-term loan quickly and prefer to leverage their valuable assets without having to part with them forever. Our expert valuations and loans can be quicker than antique dealers.
Can I pawn my antiques online?
Suttons and Robertsons is a pawn shop and online pawnbroker. We have local pawnbrokers in London but if you can’t come into one of our stores or prefer to transact with us from home, we can offer you a secure online pawn service.
I’d like to pawn an antique that I use every day – can I do that?
We will always make a valuation based on the condition of the piece, as well as its history and provenance. A much-loved Tiffany lamp could be used every day but still be in superb condition. The same goes for clocks and silverware. Simply because it is used and loved doesn’t mean that it has no value.
Where can I pawn my antiques?
Can I pawn my antiques?
We are happy to offer a valuation and loan quotation for any of your antiques. Our experts are well-connected in the antiques industry and will give you an accurate and market-value estimate for your piece. We will consider pieces of all types, including clocks, silverware, furniture and rare books. We focus on the condition, the provenance and the market demand.
How much can I pawn my antiques for?
We offer loans from £500 up to £2 million but our minimum value threshold on antiques is £5,000. We always aim to provide our clients with the maximum loan amount though the amount depends on many factors including authenticity, condition, rarity and provenance.
I have had a couple of antiques in my family for years. Can I pawn them?
We can value antiques that have been handed down the generations as their origins are more likely to be authentic and the provenance can be more easily tracked. We will take good care of your items and will consider any antique items of any age for a pawnbroking valuation.
