Gold is sold by its weight. A Troy ounce weighs 31.1 grams and equals twenty pennyweights (DWT). "carats" indicate what percentage of gold there is in a given item. That ranges from pure gold which contains 24 carats (24ct) of gold to 9 carat gold containing only 37.5% of gold in its metal composition.
In the UK, all gold, silver, and platinum items must be hallmarked with a stamp. The hallmark means that the item has been tested independently and conforms to legal standards for its metal purity.
