About Us

About Us

Suttons & Robertsons is London's oldest, active, pawnbroking business and among the largest in the UK. Our heritage of service began with Mr. Thomas Miller Sutton when he founded his pawnbroking business in 1770, which moved it to its present location in Victoria Street in 1800. Robertsons, established in 1797, was not far behind, and remained a family-owned business until the 1960's. In 2006, we joined our two, venerable, businesses together to become Suttons & Robertsons. In 2010, Suttons & Robertsons became part of the Dollar Financial Group family of companies.

At Suttons & Robertsons, we see pawnbroking as a straightforward means of raising short-term cash. We can offer our customers secured loans of up to £1 million pounds. Our mission is to make the loan process quick, convenient, and civilized. In an era of faceless service, we take pleasure in providing truly personal service. We look forward to serving you, whether for a loan, valuation, or purchase of fine jewellery.

Suttons & Robertsons is a registered member of the National Pawnbrokers Association.

A rich history

From foreign royalty to celebrated footballers to everyman - and everywoman - ours is a storied history of service at Suttons & Robertsons. Without revealing any names or dates, we can comfortably share a few interesting highlights.

The rare & the extraordinary

Some of the fascinating and exceptional items we have valued and held as pledges over the years include a famous recording artist's first recording contract...a 19th Century Russian side cabinet that belonged to Tsar Nicholas II...artwork by Salvador Dali, David Hockney, and Damien Hirst...a first edition X-Men comic ... rare pink, green, and blue diamonds... and antique Victorian erotic pocket watches among them.

One aristocratic family has pawned and redeemed the same necklace for 3 generations. Another high-born customer pledged an exquisite Edwardian diamond tiara. In times past, the lords and ladies of Eaton Square pledged their trunkloads of silver for cash needed to impress guests they were hosting for the weekend. Suttons & Robertsons pawnshops were also a frequent stopping point for aristocrats who required quick cash for their jaunts to Monte Carlo.

Legend & lore

It was said that Thomas Miller Sutton, principal of T. M. Sutton during the pre-war years, could gauge the number of carats in a piece of gold jewellery simply by holding it. He is best remembered for his refusal to hand over the notorious Stavinsky jewels, despite immense pressure from the French authorities, during one of Europe's most politically volatile financial scandals of the 20th Century. Today, as it was then, our customers' privacy has always been paramount.

In the 1930's T. M. Sutton had offices in Paris, Cannes, and Berlin. Many of Europe's wealthier citizens sent their jewels and artefacts to T. M. Sutton in London, by means of a courier, to raise funds in those uncertain times.

Whatever the economic situation, Suttons & Robertsons, as London's discerning pawnbrokers, remains steadfast in providing ready cash for pledged valuables with total discretion.
